In addition to the two All-NEWHA squads revealed on Tuesday, the league's All-Rookie Team was selected as well as the All-Sportswomanship Team. Six first-year student-athletes (regardless of position) were voted to the All-Rookie Team while the All-Sportswomanship Team nominees were furnished by each of the league's Head Coaches.
Tuesday's announcement is the fourth All-League team released by the NEWHA, the newest NCAA Division I league for women's ice hockey, since its formation in 2017. The soon-to-be seven team league was granted official NCAA Division I status in August 2019.
Sacred Heart's Anna Klein was named NEWHA Player of the Year and her teammate, Kelly Solak, picked up Defender of the Year accolades. Klein becomes the second consecutive Player of the Year selection from the Pioneers roster (Jayne Lewis, 2020) while Solak is the second student-athlete in four years to earn the NEWHA's top defensive honor.
Franklin Pierce's Suzette Faucher was issued the NEWHA Goaltender of the Year award, the first such honor for a Ravens student-athlete, while Tyra Turner of Saint Anselm earned the conference's Rookie of the Year award. The Hawks have produced three of the four Rookie of the Year selections in NEWHA history.
Head Coach David Stockdale, in his 10th year leading Franklin Pierce, collected Coach of the Year honors following a vote of his peers. The top seed entering the NEWHA postseason on Tuesday, the Ravens sprinted out to a 20-9-1 record this season with a 16-4-0 mark against league foes. Stockdale's unit won a program-record 11 consecutive games near the end of the season.
The league leader in point scoring (14-22=36), Klein capped an outstanding senior season as the league leader in points per game (1.13) while handing out 22 helpers on the season. Tying for 12th place among NCAA Division I student-athletes with five power play goals, Klein also scored three game-winning goals for Sacred Heart and added a shorthanded marker as well.
On defense, Solak led all NEWHA defenders in point scoring, logging nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points (9-12=21). The league leader in power play goals by a defender with three, Solak led the NEWHA in plus-minus (+23) and helped her team to the fourth-best penalty kill (92.6%) in the nation.
Faucher compiled a 13-2-1 record in net for Franklin Pierce, leading all NCAA Division I netminders in save percentage (.957). Second in the country in goals-against average, Faucher racked up six shutouts in 2021-22 and is riding a six-game winning streak heading into the NEWHA playoffs – she has conceded just three goals across her last seven games for a .978 save percentage.
Turner, in her first campaign at Saint Anselm, produced 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points (13-14=27), leading all NEWHA first-year student-athletes in goal scoring. Tallying at least one point in nine of her last 11 games heading into Tuesday's NEWHA Quarterfinals fixture, Turner has put home two shorthanded goals, ranking fifth among NCAA Division I student-athletes.
