NEWHA Supervisor of Officials Eugene Binda Announces Retirement
WINTHROP, Mass. – New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Supervisor of Officials, Eugene Binda, has announced his retirement, bringing to a close a distinguished tenure dedicated to the growth, development, and integrity of collegiate hockey officiating.
In his role with NEWHA, Binda has overseen the coordination, assignment, and continued development of officials, while also supporting Atlantic Hockey America and College Hockey America. His leadership has extended far beyond scheduling as he has served as a trusted liaison between coaches, officials, and league administrators, and as a dedicated mentor to countless current and aspiring officials. His commitment to education and growth has elevated the standard of officiating and strengthened the integrity of the game at multiple levels.
Beginning in 1988, Binda officiated as a referee in ECAC Division II and Division III hockey and later contributed as a linesman in Hockey East. His experience and insight from years on the ice have been instrumental in shaping the next wave of officials.
In addition to his collegiate work, Binda co-founded and operates Referee's Crease with his son, Eugene Jr. Through this organization, he has played a vital role in training and assigning officials from youth hockey through Junior A, creating a pipeline of skilled and prepared officials. As Referee-in-Chief for several organizations, he has consistently identified and developed talent, helping integrate officials into higher-level programs such as the Atlantic Hockey Officiating Development Program.
Outside of hockey, Binda dedicated 33 years to The Boston Globe as a journeyman pressman. Following his retirement from the Globe, he continued to share his expertise as an educator with the Graphic Communications International Union, traveling nationwide to support and train union members. His commitment to education is further reflected in his academic achievements, earning a bachelor's degree in labor studies from UMass Boston in 1998 and a master's degree from UMass Amherst's Union Leadership Program in 2002.
Binda's legacy is not only defined by his professional accomplishments but also by the relationships he has built and the countless individuals he has mentored along the way. His passion for officiating, dedication to fairness, and unwavering support for the hockey community have made a lasting impact.
The NEWHA extends its deepest gratitude to Gene for years of service, leadership, and commitment. His influence will be felt for years to come, and he leaves behind a stronger, more connected officiating community.
